Former Miss India, Gul Panag has been enthusiastically promoting her new film Straight.. “This is my second film with director Parvati Balagopalan,” says Gul. “I didn’t need to listen to the script when Parvati rang up as she is an excellent director and I have immense faith in her. In the end, it is faith that moves mountains.”

The movie, a gay comedy, typifies the unusual roles that Gul chooses for herself. What influences her choice of script? “It’s just instinct. Sometimes I love the script but have no faith in the director, and sometimes it’s the other way round. So it’s just a mix and match of everything.”

Gul comes from an army background and loves adventure sports such as shooting, paragliding, horse riding, trekking and marathon running. She runs the Mumbai marathon every year. “Once I tried to participate at competitive level shooting,” she confides, “I’m thinking seriously about it. But, it is difficult to practice in Mumbai. Skeet shooting needs a large space to practice, as I have to shoot flying objects in this type of shooting. But I practice whenever I get the opportunity.”

Gul is a Maths graduate, educated in both India and Africa. She will next be seen in Hello Darling with Rajpal Yadav, Celina Jaitley and Isha Koppikar.
