Divya Dutta had a happy birthday celebration – her birthday was September 25th. She’s riding high on the success of Welcome to Sanjjapur. Her co-stars from the movie were there as well as director Shyam Benegal who met up with American director Jennifer Lynch for the first time. Jennifer is currently directing Divya in the movie Naagin, along with Mallika Sherawat. Other actors present from her new movie were Irrfan Khan and Govind Menon.
Divya has for many years been one of the best specialist supporting actors in the business and won a Zee Cine Award for her role in Veer Zaara. It’s only in the last couple of years, however, that her talents have really become prominent and she has shone in movies such as Silsilay, Umrao Jaan, Aaja Nachle, Apne, The Last Lear, U Me aur Hum and soon in Love Game and Dilli 6.
After her bubbly looks in Veer Zaara, Divya lost a lot of weight and it was then that her career took an upturn and she started getting more glamorous roles. “Beyond a point, I realised that a person’s looks really matter,” she says, “It was important for me to maintain a fit figure and generally be fit. I had to stop everything I love doing, including giving up on gol gappas, sweets and all good food. Then I did a lot of exercise, went to the gym, and it paid. I am getting exciting roles now.”
Divya is very excited about the range of roles she is now being offered – each one seems different. “I think these choices are very intuitive and instinctive for every person. There is no set idea about the kind of roles I want to do, but I guess I have done a good combination of commercial and parallel cinema,” she explains.
