Vinay Sapru-Radhika Rao’s Sanam Teri Kasam has made history. It is the first re-run film in the movie theatres of India to have made thrice more revenue than what it made when it was originally released.
Harshvardhan Rane, who plays the lead in this emotionally plush rom-com, is dazed and grateful.
“I am currently doing theatre hopping,” Harshvardhan tells me on Saturday evening. “We’ve covered five theatres, and we are now heading to Thane. The reaction is insane.”
Regrettably his Pakistani co-star Mawra Hocane is missing out on all the excitement of the re-run’s astounding impact.
“We lost touch after Sanam Teri Kasam. Sir, do you know what it is like to have a flop? No one wants to go anywhere near the disaster zone. We all dispersed the promise of a sequel forgotten. I am now wearing the same jacket that I wore in Sanam Teri Kasam. I wore it only once after the film, for my sister’s wedding. I am now doing the theatre rounds in that jacket. It feels like delayed success,” says Harshvardhan emotionally.
Mowra Hocane coincidentally got married on the same date this week, February 5, when Sanam Teri Kasam was released in 2016.
“I am sharing some of the videos with you. What I couldn’t experience when the film was released, I am experiencing now. I cannot describe what it feels like,” says Harsh gratefully amidst shrieks of approbation from theatre audiences.
