Starring Harshvardhan Rane and Mowra Hocan, Sanam Teri Kasam directed by Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao, originally released in 2016. Now the romantic drama is back in theatres and the box-office is booming. Harshvardan, in an candid conversation with Subhash K Jha, opens about the success of the film the second time around and more.

Harshvardhan, your 2016 flop Sanam Teri Kasam has re-opened to a much bigger audience than the new releases this week?
I had to literally go below producer Deepak Mukut Sir’s home with fans of the film to shout and plead to re-release the film. It’s a nine-year old void, finally being filled. Life bruises us with punches of failure and disappointment. Results act like a soothing ointment over burns and pain. Until then one has to apply self motivational balm and eat pills of discipline and persistence to stand up everyday and fight the fight.

It has not been an easy journey for you?
We have to pick ourselves and collect ourselves everyday, get ready, wear good clothes and show up even when there are no results.

Did you ever think of giving up the fight?
As Harivansh Rai Bachchanji famously said, ‘Apne mann ka ho to accha, na ho to aur bhi accha.’ kyunki phir woh bhagwaan ki marzi ka hota hai (If it is according to your wish then it is good, if it is not so then it is even better. Because then it is according to God’s will). I am used to delayed gratification since childhood sir, I follow my gut and after many years I get validation. This time its proved yet again that audience is King.

Why don’t you never talk about your personal life?
I have always heard that a star’s life is expected to be transparent and people who buy tickets have a right to know about their personal life, but I am not a star yet! I will openly talk about my personal life the day my film does well at the boxoffice and not on mobile phones, because on that day I will feel that they own me and my life, completely!

Do you feel vindicated?
People never bought tickets for my first Hindi film Sanam Teri Kasam, they gave all the love to the film after downloading it, as a result I guess our producer Deepak Mukut ji and co-directors Radhika Aapte Ma’am and Vinay Sir never made the sequel as planned. I dont blame them. Why will anyone spend money on a film if it’s going to be downloaded and not watched in theatre? Having said that, this has made me stronger and more clearer as now I will have to agree with a star-son who told me once at an event that यह फैन्स तेरी टिकट नहीं लेंगे, सिर्फ़ सेल्फ़ी लेंगे!
