In lieu of the impending climate crisis, IIFA has been a firm supporter of the environment. Having taken several initiatives over the years to curb the ever-expanding issues that threaten it and taking its commitment to a greener planet forward, IIFA has tied up with the United Nations Environment Programme once more, ahead of the Videocon d2h IIFA Weekend and Floriana IIFA Awards in Toronto, this June.

World Environment Day (WED), celebrated every year on 5th June, is a worldwide celebration of pro-environment activities. Initiated in 1972 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), it has grown into the largest medium of raising awareness about the environment and the issues that put it at risk. Encouraging people all over the world to participate in WED helps to reach out to the public on an individual basis, enabling each person to take responsibility and in turn action against the deterioration of the environment.

In 2007, IIFA launched the concept of a ‘Green Carpet’, replacing the traditional red carpet rolled out at all award shows, as a symbol of its crusade against global warming. Friends of IIFA, Priyanka Chopra and Rahul Bose, have extended their support toward this noble cause. Priyanka has pledged to plant one tree for every activity registered in her name, while Rahul, having seen her pledge, has raised the stakes by pledging to plant two trees for every activity registered in his name.

This year, the theme for WED is Forests: Nature at your service. Covering over a third of the earth’s surface, forests are an integral part of our ecosystem, playing a vital role in sustaining the environment. But deforestation has destroyed a large percentage of the forest area in India leading to potential climate change, global warming, loss of water resources and myriad other environmental problems.

To participate, watch the videos on the WED website and then via the WED Challenge page, register your activities and vote for Team Rahul or Team Priyanka!

Tickets for this year’s IIFA sold out within minutes of being announced. But now, for the first time ever, fans of Indian cinema will be able to watch the event live on Pay Per View, from the comfort of their own homes.

The Floriana IIFA Awards will take place as part of the CIBC IIFA Celebrations in Toronto, with a variety of companion ‘Buzz’ events taking over the GTA, transforming them to reflect the vibrancy of Bollywood and Indian culture. IIFA is the first of its kind, created to promote Indian cinema globally, and it will now be the first ever to present an awards ceremony live in the Pay Per View format.

The collaboration between Wizcraft and MultiVision Media will bring this celebration of Indian Cinema and culture, in unprecedented style, to American television screens and many others around the globe. The North American debut of IIFA is the largest of its kind to date, and will showcase the glitz and glamour of Bollywood.
