Kalki Koechlin’s Margarita with a Straw has hit film festival circuits and has since then gone round the globe, being the toast of the festival circuit and setting audiences on fire with a positive impact. The film is directed by established veteran Shonali Bose who is well known in the film fraternity for her upbeat unconventional and deep-rooted film making. The Amu director has yet again unraveled a work of art in this production with Kalki Koechlin in the lead. More so it has gone on to win and become critically acclaimed worldwide. To name a few festivals where the film has been presented are Sundance, Palm Springs, Tallinn Black Nights, Busan, BFI London Film festival.
An eye for detail is what sets apart a good film from great. Margarita with a Straw released its first look on YouTube where ace composer/director Joi Barua was roped in to give the film what one might call its soul. The Assamese rock musician is known for his unconventional music with inspired renditions of Assamese enthused school of thought and classic rock.
“Dusokute which means In ‘Her’ Eyes; was a breezy uptempo rock song I had composed.” states humbled Joi Barua. “I wanted the listener to feel the inertia kicking in right from the start and a sense of motion that carried throughout. Almost like running, or biking. The director Shonali Bose loved the instant energy of the song and felt it conveyed a distinct sense of optimism, youth, hope and of love. Much like what the characters in the movie felt and were going through. Definitely like a kick-start to anything.”
More so Joi Barua is part of many more exciting projects that are due for release in this year including John Abraham’s film with the working titled ‘Banana’ directed by Sajid Ali. This composer/music director is somebody the film industry needs to keep an eye out for as his work is not just strikingly different but has the ability to speak the language of music without any barriers.
With the elements of great talent pooled in with hard work, passion and a sense of film making that has an impact on the community at large, Margarita with a Straw today sits upon many accolades from the international film fraternity at large.
Lastly Bollywood Superstar Aamir Khar who is known to attach himself to selected projects which break the mould of mainstream Bollywood to support and cerate Indian Cinema that has the creative skill and ability to compete on an International frontier. His presence and support towards the film has only created a larger inertia to drive commercial mainstream audiences to look out for it.
