The award-winning film ALMOST HOME, starring Kamal Khan, has been selected to screen at the upcoming Burbank International Film Festival and DC South Asian Film Festival in September. This adds to its impressive run at nearly a dozen festivals, including the London Festival of Cinema and the Festival of Cinema NYC.
Menhaj Huda directed the drama, for which Kamal Khan wrote the screenplay. It also stars Bernard White and Erica Ibsen.
Set against the backdrop of post-war America, it tells the gripping story of Aamir, a Muslim-American Marine who struggles with PTSD and guilt over a tragic incident during his service. As he battles night terrors, prejudice, and feelings of betrayal from his community, Aamir embarks on a journey of self-discovery, confronting the demons that haunt him.
Director Menhaj Huda said in a statement, “Some stories are a quiet revolution. When I encountered this project, I knew immediately it was one of those. For too long, Hollywood has pigeonholed brown people-especially Muslims-into extremes, distorting our realities into boxes of fear or otherness. But the reality of our true stories is richer, more nuanced, filled with moments of humour, heroism, as well as ordinariness. This project is my opportunity to begin the balancing of that distortion. It is my way of lifting our narratives into the light, to portray our lives not as a spectacle, but as part of the everyday world we all inhabit. Through this film, I hope to shift perceptions, break boundaries, and create art that mirrors the real, complex beauty of our experience, and bring much-needed attention to those in our community who are prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country.”
ALMOST HOME is a social impact film that aims to illuminate the Muslim Americans serving in the Armed Forces and raise awareness for Veterans Health with the filmmaking community.
