India’s most beloved stand up comedian’s new film Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 has opened to encouraging response. Surprisingly Kapil says he is happier doing stand-up comedy. “I agreed to do my first film, Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon in 2015 because of Anukalp Goswami who wrote the film. I didn’t even know where to stand, where to look into the camera in a film shooting. Anukalp Sir has been my permanent collaborator on my Kapil Sharma Show. It was only for him that I agreed to do my first film. Now when he came with the idea of sequel ten years later I was like, ‘Whoever remembers the first part?’ He assured me people remember Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon.”

Kapil confesses he was sceptical about the plot Anukalp Goswami had in mind for the sequel. “The idea of one man being married to three women from different religious communities sounded too controversial. Sir, I know I keep getting into controversies. But I don’t do it intentionally. So when Anukalp Sir suggested this idea, I asked him was he sure. He assured me our film will offend no one. And he was right! People have responded positively to the film.”

One of the highlights of Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 is the surprise appearance of Kapil’s wife Ginny. Kapil says with a laugh, “Although I am shown flirting with many women in the film, Ginny is the only one for me. So when she agreed to do this small cameo in Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2, I was thrilled.”

He agrees his wife is his anchor. “She runs my home and my life, looks after my mother and my children. And I happily let her. I call her my Home Minister. She supported me in my darkest phase. Sir,you know what it was like. You also stood by me.”

Now Kapil is all geared up for the next season of The Kapil Sharma Show. “The stage is where I am the most comfortable. Thankfully, people have not got tired of me even after all these years. During the forthcoming season I hope I am able to keep the audience entertained. We’ve lined up quite a few unexpected gigs.”

Before we end our conversation I ask Kapil about his restaurant in Canada being targeted repeatedly.

Kapil says with a sigh, “Lataji had once said, ‘Only a tree leaden with fruits gets stoned.’ I won’t say anything more.”
