Often cited as the consummate supporting actor, Kay Kay Menon has suggested recently that this generally means he gets overlooked when it comes to wider recognition. “When actors like Irrfan Khan and I succeed, people try to find out reasons as to why we have succeeded,” he suggests.
Kay Kay is very much looking forward to his intense role in Stoneman about the 1980s serial killer in Mumbai (1987) and Kolkata (1989). Over twenty people were murdered by one or possibly two killers – it’s not known whether the Kolkata killer was a copycat. “I am playing the role of a suspended cop,” he says, “Though it is based on a real life incident you can call it fiction except that the Stoneman was inspired by a real murderer. It’s a good film.”
Coming up next in Kay Kay’s very diverse portfolio is Gulaal. It’s an Anurag Kashyap film that has been trapped in development hell for five years. It centres on campus politics and the music/poetry scene. “Gulaal is one of the most challenging films I have done,” explains Kay Kay, “It’s directed by Anurag Kashyap and is based on a very special issue. I think that people who know and understand cinema will love it.”
