David Dhawan is back! After entertaining the audience for most of the 90s, he somehow lost his way in the last decade. However, teaming up with his son seems to have helped him regain his touch. Main Tera Hero is vintage David Dhawan – very silly and absolutely hilarious.
Seenu (Varun Dhawan) is the quintessential good-for-nothing young man who everybody wants to get rid of. He falls for Sunaina (Illeana D’Cruz) who is bound to marry Angad (Arunoday Singh) against her wishes. Now he has the task of whisking her away from under Angad’s nose as well as save himself from the wrath of gangster Vikrant (Anupam Kher) whose daughter Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) has fallen in love with him.
Like most Dhawan films, there isn’t much of a story here but lots of funny skits woven together. They keep coming fast one after another and keep you on a perpetual merry high. A big part of the credit goes to the hilarious dialogues – some of them just bring the house down. Giving them able support is the enthusiastic cast. After a long time we get an ensemble of actors who seem to be enjoying themselves so much. Every character is a little crazy and even the villains end up looking adorable eventually. While the first half works in bits and parts, it is in the second half that the madness is unleashed and then it becomes impossible to stop smiling. The fun is interrupted only during the unnecessary songs though a couple of them are foot-tapping.
Holding it all together is Varun who lives up to the potential he showed in his debut film. While he is no Govinda (as yet), he does manage to come close to Salman Khan’s comic timing in his father’s earlier films. He also seems to share Salman’s penchant for taking off his shirt at every opportunity (and the females in the audience will have no reason to complain!). The heroines don’t have much to do except look glamorous, and Nargis makes a better dumb blonde of the two. Illeana is neither impressive as eye-candy nor as an actor. No such complaint from the supporting cast. Dhawan’s regulars like Kader Khan, Satish Kaushik, Razaak Khan are not there this time but Anupam Kher, Saurabh Shukla and Rajpal Yadav make up for their absence pretty well. Even Arunoday Singh is impressive as the cop with anger management issues.
Yes, you need to leave your brains at home to enjoy this one. Main Tera Hero is unpretentious about its silliness and honest in its intentions to give you rib-tickling entertainment. Watch it to de-stress after a hard week at work.
