As you probably know one of the year’s biggest films is hitting the big screen on 26th January 2012. We are talking about Agneepath . Agneepath, directed by Karan Malhotra, is a homage to the cult 1990 classic directed by the late Mukul S Anand. The action drama stars Hrithik Roshan playing the role of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan originally played by Amitabh Bachchan. The film also stars Priyanka Chopra as Kaali, Sanjay Dutt as the menacing Kancha Cheena and Rishi Kapoor as Rauf Lala, another antagonist in the film.
This is their own telling of the story of Agneepath and from what we have seen so far it is new film, with a new feeling with some very intense action, performances and story. Describing the film, producer Karan Johar said, “In the remake Vijay is a younger boy. So it’s important to understand that this character is played by a younger actor too. Vijay was portrayed by Amitji at a certain age when he did the film. And because the character is now played by a younger man, he becomes an underdog. So the story is how this underdog rises against this impactful, big and scary villain( Kancha). That’s when you see the triumph of the hero’s spirit.”
Talking about star Hrithik Roshan, director Karan Malhotra told PTI, “He (Hrithik) is a treat for every director. He loves to discuss, debate and most importantly be shocked. He thrives on such challenges. Once he is on, he gives full support to a film without any interference. He doesn’t work just for his own character, he works for the whole film.”
Hrithik’s character is out for revenge and he battles Sanjay’s Kancha to the very end. We hear the 20-minute, yes 20-minute, climax scene is one of the toughest on film where Hrithik and Sanjay engage in hand to hand combat. “Both Sanjay and Hrithik are big and powerful in their own way. I have this belief that bigger the villain, more powerful the fight because at the end of it all, he has to succumb to the hero. Dutt is just the perfect villain for any hero to conquer and in Agneepath it would be no different.”
The other villain of the piece is played by Rishi Kapoor, who told Devansh Patel that he had his doubts about playing the character, “I play a butcher in the film. Rauf Lala trades in flesh of animals and girls. He sells teenagers. He sells drugs. But more importantly, these are elementary things that were difficult to digest and to take on. Rishi Kapoor playing a ‘kasai’ (butcher). Now you tell me, from which angle do I look like one (laughs). Jokes apart, it’s the most challenging role of my career I can say. It was a herculean task. I hope people accept me as Rauf Lala and that’ll be my biggest victory.”
Bringing the light, the romance and the strength is Kaali played by Priyanka Chopra. About her character she has said, “The best thing about Kaali (her character in the film) is that she is Vijay’s strength. She is the soul, happiness and naughtiness in the film.”
The story of Agneepath:
In a small Indian village Mandwa, Vijay Dinanath Chauhan (Hrithik Roshan) is taught by his principled father about the path of fire – Agneepath. His life is completely shattered when the evil drug dealer Kancha (Sanjay Dutt) hangs his father to death. Vijay leaves for Bombay with his pregnant mother and has only one mission in life- to come back to Mandwa and bring back the glory of his father’s name.
In Bombay, 12-yr-old Vijay is taken under the wings of the city gang lord Rauf Lala (Rishi Kapoor). From then on it is a journey of revenge where he makes and breaks many relationships only to get closer to his aim. Vijay finds support only in his best friend Kaali (Priyanka Chopra), who stands by him at every moment in his life. Fifteen years later his hatred for Kancha takes him back to Mandwa where life comes full circle.
