It has been officially confirmed that Priyanka Chopra will be the female lead in Yash Raj Films’ forthcoming project Gunday. The film will be directed by Ali Abbas Zafar (Mere Brother ki Dulhan) and it also stars Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor in the male leads. Ali confirmed the news on his Twitter account with the following statement: “So finally we have the leading lady for GUNDAY….Priyanka Chopra will star opposite Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor.”
However, it was rumored that Katrina Kaif was the original choice and was first offered the role. She had to choose between Gunday or the Hindi remake of the Hollywood film Knight and Day opposite Hrithik Roshan, since there would be scheduling conflicts if she ended up signing both films. However, a source close to YRF stated to the Indian press why the makers chose Priyanka for this particular film: “The lead female is rather challenging and performance based. And the makers thought that Priyanka would fit the bill better.”
A press release from YRF highlights what we will see when the film hits the cinema: “Amidst the most turbulent times in the history of Kolkata, then Calcutta, from 1971 to 1988, Bikram and Bala rose from being small time wagon breakers and coal thieves to becoming the biggest and most powerful black marketing mafia-men. A rare combination of vigour and wit, the two were inseparable and the city of Calcutta swore by their friendship. As their notoriety became the stuff of legends… the People of this sprawling city started calling these two carefree rebels… ‘GUNDAY.’”
Shooting for the historical action film will begin in December and it is scheduled for a 2013 release. Perhaps Priyanka may wow us again in Gunday, just like she recently did in Barfi!
