Just as we were about to bring you an early preview of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s epic romance originally titled Ram-Leela, the film was put on hold, pending a court appeal, claiming that the film offended religious groups. The film was duly renamed ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela’ and the makers confirmed that the character of Ram bears no resemblance to Lord Ram from the Ramayana, but actually is more inspired by Romeo from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.
The film is due for release on 15th November, but Bhansali and team may still not be in the clear. Now in further developments it is being reported that the Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed that the word ‘Ram Leela’ be removed from the title completely. In addition to this it has been reported that a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged in Jalandhar, Punjab against Bhansali and actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, pertaining to the film hurting religious sentiment.
Meanwhile, millions of film fans and freedom of speech and expression activists eagerly await the resolution of these orders and for the film to be released. With barely over 12 hours to go, be cross and fingers and hope…
We do know that the film fraternity screening is happening in Mumbai so hopefully that is a good sign!
