Twitterers had something else to celebrate besides welcoming the New Year over the week-end. The appropriate line that comes to mind is, “Stop the press! Shah Rukh Khan is on Twitter!”

It’s the King Khan himself. We know this isn’t an impostor because he was introduced to the Twitter-sphere by his friend, director and producer Karan Johar. We also know that Karan is the real deal since he has a verified profile.

On January 3 2010 Karan simply tweeted, “hey guys…SHAHRUKH KHAN on twitter @iamsrk….welcome him!!!!”

A few minutes later came this message, “for all those asking….yes!!! it is shahrukh on twitterverse…@iamsrk”

Within hours, the mega-star’s list of followers grew from hundreds to thousands. He’s currently on over 35,000 followers, beating Abhishek Bachchan (a popular and avid Tweeter) who has over 32,000 followers.

SRK’s first tweet read, “hi everyone. being extremely shy i never thought i would be here. but my friend @kjohar25 insisted that i should learn to share my life.”

No other Bollywood star has received such a grand welcome when joining Twitter. Nearly every A-list actor on Twitter expressed their excitement about the Bollywood Baadshah jumping on the bandwagon of social networking.

Up to now, SRK has been very colloquial with his tweets and has spoken about his wife and children. He has also been giving his fans insight into his work schedule, like, “dubbing for khan for the 25th time…hyper karan making me do it again and again”

SRK fans are waiting in eager anticipation for his forthcoming film, My Name is Khan where he will share the screen with everyone’s favourite leading lady, Kajol. The film is directed by Karan and will release in cinemas worldwide on Friday, February 12.

SRK is rather humorous in his tweets saying things like, “got to go and sleep a bit. my dreams come on at 8 a.m…don’t want to miss any episodes.Todays r without commercial breaks too. love u all”

A few hours later after SRK’s first tweet, Karan said, “twitterverse in a tizz!!! @iamsrk will am sure enjoy the twitterpower and add it to it in his own way….”

Indeed – Twitterverse was (and still is) in a tizz! One can’t help but wonder if SRK joining Twitter happened just a few weeks before the release of My Name is Khan is purely coincidental? Whatever it may be, fans across the globe, including folk from the film fraternity are smitten that Shah Rukh will now be able to communicate and interact with his audience directly.

It’s a surprise that “SRK is on Twitter” didn’t become a Trending Topic!
