10. Dhanush – Sonam (Raanjhanaa)
This unusual tale of love set in Banaras, saw the Hindi debut of the National Award winning “Kolaveri D” star Dhanush. “Raanjhanaa” gave us an unusual but a refreshing pairing in the form of Dhanush-Sonam. The two complemented each other perfectly whilst portraying complex and contrasting characters. The off-screen camaraderie between the two translated beautifully on-screen. Their pairing was not only incredibly gratifying but also stood out as one of the highlights of the movie.
9. Arjun – Chitrangada (Inkaar)
Sudhir Mishra’s 2013 release featured Arjun and Chitrangada as characters in a strained love story. Passion and aggression were the two sides of their relationship with their personal egos never allowing them to fully commit to the relationship. Arjun and Chitrangada had sizzling chemistry as they battled out a sexual harassment allegation across a company board room. The conflict was just a cover up for a deep seated emotion both characters couldn’t bare to admit. And whilst you thought you’d seen it all throughout the duration of the film the pre-climax sequence in the bathroom brought another vulnerable side to their relationship beautifully. One of the most underrated pairing of 2013 has to be these two.
8. Sushant – Parineeti (Shuddh Desi Romance)
A movie handling the concept of “sexual attraction” needs to have a pairing which is sizzling yet subtle, passionate yet charming. And that is exactly what “Shuddh Desi Romance” offered with Sushant & Parineeti. Even though the subject of the movie was much debated on, the general consensus gave a nod to the crackling chemistry between the two. This was another refreshing pairing portraying an apt blend of passion & intensity. Both of them looked absolutely endearing on-screen and captured the nuances of their characters perfectly.
7. Imran – Kareena (Gori Tere Pyaar Mein)
The successful duo of “Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu” made a comeback with this rom-com movie set in a village. The expectations were naturally high since the pair was loved immensely in their last outing together and they did not disappoint. Even though the movie did not create the same spur, the sweet & breezy chemistry between the two was appreciated. They managed to look likable together despite their characters being all-gloss-no-substance. It was probably the off-screen friendship & comfort level between the two doing the trick on-screen.
6. Shahrukh – Deepika (Chennai Express)
After their successful stint in the 2006 Blockbuster “Om Shanti Om” the popular pair of Shahrukh – Deepika made a comeback in “Chennai Express”, another blockbuster. Though the movie explored the comedy and action side of their characters more, their chemistry was as good and as charming as it gets in Bollywood. Critics as well as people found themselves loving this Jodi more than they did before. The two brought a certain liveliness to the movie which worked highly in it’s favour. Despite having a huge age difference, they both sparkled on-screen together.
5. Irrfan – Nimrat (The Lunchbox)
For the first time in the history of Indian cinema and Bollyspice the chemistry of two characters who never faced each other directly in the film is being admired so much. Sajan and Ila’s chemistry was pure and beautiful. You the audience couldn’t wait for that latter to arrive in the dabba so that their conversation began. They developed an attached and fondness without ever having to meet each other and before you knew it you were at the edge of your seat wondering if Sajan would indeed turn up at that restaurant. Lunchbox not only gave us an unforgettable film but told us that chemistry and love isn’t always physical. Three chears for director Ritesh Batra for bringing to the screen this new facet of love.
4. Ranveer – Sonakshi (Lootera)
This period romance drama was highly applauded by the critics, some even calling it a masterpiece. One of the major factor that worked amazingly well for the movie was the terrific pairing of Ranveer & Sonakshi. Their heartwarming & bewitching chemistry gave a totally different edge to the movie. Lootera explored the theme of love, pain & separation and the leads were highly enchanting as they made the audience feel their pain and cry with them. Not only was the movie visually stunning but the chemistry between the leads was extremely captivating and held people’s attention throughout.
3. Ranbir – Deepika (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani)
This pairing had everyone on their toes from the time it was decided that they will star together again in “Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani”. Nobody expected their Jodi to create the kind of craze that it eventually did. The movie was light-hearted and their chemistry, absolutely endearing. Though the concept had very little new material to offer but the chemistry between Ranbir and Deepika was the kind that people will rave about for years to come. They added an unbelievable spark and spunk to an ordinary story which left people wishing for more once again. In true blue filmy style, this Jodi was & is “Subhanallah”.
2. Aditya – Shraddha (Aashiqui 2)
Aashiqui 2 had a lot to live up to since it was a sequel to the hit 1990 movie Aashiqui. Apart from an amazing soundtrack, one thing that assured this movie’s success at the Box Office was the chemistry that the lead pair shared. Aditya and Shraddha were a delight to watch throughout the movie. From the intense scenes to the light-hearted scenes to the romantic ones, they excelled in all of them. Their off-screen comfort level added a certain charm to their on-screen love story. The plot of the movie might have had few flaws but their scintillating chemistry totally made up for it.
1. Ranveer – Deepika (Ram-Leela)
Love, Lust & Passion formed the basic core of Bhansali’s adaptation of Romeo & Juliet. And Bhansali got the casting of his Ram & Leela perfect & how! The film did try to cash in on the Ranveer & Deepika’s much-publicised off-screen romance but the couple’s raunchy & earthy chemistry was the strength of the film. Moreover, the duo totally sinked into their characters making them more believable than ever. They were vulnerable, fierce and intense all at the same time. Together they created fireworks on-screen. For their magnificent portrayals and crackling chemistry, there is no doubt that Ranveer – Deepika are the Best Jodi of 2013 in our countdown.
