Riding High on Nothing

A number of popular actors are known for throwing starry tantrums and for being incredibly demanding. For the most part, most of these celebrities have good reason: a number of hits and critical acclaim. However, there is a handful who may have been lucky enough to have a hit to their name but then…nothing. And yet, they seem to feel that it is perfectly fine for them to throw their weight around; basically riding on nothing.

For starters, let’s look at the very stylish Kareena Kapoor. The actress is still riding high from her 2007 Jab We Met. While she may choose not to look at her list of flops thereafter, she should be reminded that since then, she is yet to deliver a solid hit. Tashan, a dud; Golmaal Returns, hardly her film; Kambakkht Ishq; one of the worst films in 2009; Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna, need we say more; Kurbaan, enough said and lastly, 3 Idiots; Aamir all the way. So basically, while we have seen a lot of her, we haven’t seen enough quality from her.

Next is Kapoor’s ex-beau Shahid Kapoor who rides on the same plane for the most part. He received much accolades for his role in Jab We Met and then for some reason was in Kismet Konnection. It was then that we saw him in perhaps what could easily be his career’s best role, Kaminey. However, post Kaminey what does Shahid have to his name? Dil Bole Hadippa!, Dance Pe Chance, Paathshala and recently Badmaash Company. Need we say more?

Sonam Kapoor is another one actress who could easily be a part of this group. The actress is obviously relying on two factors: her pretty good looks and her last name, to help her move ahead. But what has she accomplished thus far? Saawariya and Delhi-6; read: flop and flop again.

When was the last time you saw Saif Ali Khan in a role that made you say WOW! It has to have been Omkara. Beyond the 2006 superhit, the only time SAK was a part of a film that was actually watchable, was Race and more recently Love Aaj Kal. And he has starred in a list of films Eklavya lacked regality, Nehlle Pe Dehla was old, Ta Ra Rum Pum was childish, Tashan was pretentious, Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic was far too magical and Kurbaan was a sacrifice to watch.

Deepika Padukone is one thing and one thing only: popular. Post Om Shanti Om, she had one Bachna Ae Haseeno which did averagely at the box office and then 2008’s worst film of the year, Chandni Chowk to China. Love Aaj Kal gained her some credibility and she did appear in a cameo role in Billu and Main Aur Mrs. Khanna. This year, Karthik Calling Karthik did absolutely nothing for her as did the recent Housefull. Riding high on what exactly Ms. Padukone?

We could go on and on…and on. But we’ll stop here for now. However, a reality check is much order for the above and many more who are riding high on absolutely zero, zilch and nothing.
