We have your first look into the psychological drama Haiwaan, releasing September 11 and we are so intrigued. The Priyadarsha-directed film features incredibly strong characters for both Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar, challenging roles that brought them into new eras as actors. We are so ready for it!
In a recent interview, Akshay Kumar talked about his new character: “I am playing Haiwaan and my character has no grey shades; he’s out and out evil. I always wanted to play a psycho on-screen. With my last four-five films, I have tried to switch between completely different genres: comedy, horror, action, drama. This is my first time playing evil in the truest sense. I like to constantly challenge myself, and Haiwaan is that challenge for me.”
Director Priyadarshan adds, “I saw Akshay casually wearing the beanie one day at the shoot of Bhooth Bangla, and I immediately liked the look. Him wearing it in Haiwaan was my idea. I remember I was narrating the story of Haiwaan to him one day, knowing he will not do it, and asked who does he think would do the role. I was shocked when he asked me, ‘Can I do it?’ I also then thought I would have a different Akshay Kumar in my film; it will be a chance to see an actor’s potential.”
Talking to Subhash K Jha, Saif Ali Khan said about his part, “It’s the best role I’ve had in ages, if not ever! It’s a very heroic part. He is blind, but not at all helpless. He is out to save a little girl.”
Adding, playing a blind man had its challenges but, “I got the simplest and most wonderful piece of direction—Priyan told me, ‘Open your eyes wide and pretend you can’t see.’ I think with practice it became easier. We didn’t overthink it. I haven’t seen the film, so I can’t tell you how I’ve done, but I really enjoyed trying. It was a really fun adventure every day. The part with the action, given the special abilities he has, was great fun. The trick was to play him as quite normal, even understated.”
