She may not be quite there yet but with strong performances in Rock On, Ru Ba Ru and the Nandita Das movie Firaaq, Shahana Goswami is finally beginning to attract the attention she deserves. She is the daughter of former CII Chief Economist Omkar Goswami and was partly educated in the US. Her brother, meanwhile, is studying at Cambridge University in the UK.

Was she surprised at all the attention she was receiving for Rock On? “I was very surprised when I even found out that I was being promoted as one of the leads of the film because to me I felt Debbie was one supporting character and suddenly to be on the posters and to be taken around everywhere as the two female leads, it was strange. I didn’t expect that to be the case at all,” she says.

What type of roles does she see herself playing in the future? “I will carve my own path,” she says, “I will portray my image the way I want to. I am not at all averse doing commercial films but I always say that it needs as much work in a different way as it would need for another character where you would probably use method. There is a different method to approaching a commercial films and that needs a certain kind of rigor, practice, and skill which I am more that game to do but I would need time and support to be able to do that.”

Whilst Ru Ba Ru might be classed as standard Saturday afternoon fare, the on-screen chemistry between Shahana and Randeep Hooda is pretty electric and has won the Delhi girl lots of fans. She will soon be seen in Tere Kya Hoga Johnny and Mukti.
