Anand Gandhi’s Ship of Theseus has garnered a large following since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and has found a new fan in Karan Johar. Johar mentioned that he felt “inferior” as a filmmaker, and says he lacks the “talent and strength” to make such an original film.

Johar attended the special screening of the film, which was organized by filmmaker Kiran Rao. “I haven’t seen a film like this in last five-six years. It’s a film for cinema-lovers. It seems that director Anand Gandhi has taken a huge chunk of life and has made a film on it. He has made the film from his heart. You can’t say much after watching the film. It makes you speechless,” Johar confessed.

The film has been heralded “a hidden gem” and “revolutionary” by its supporters Cameron Bailey, TIFF festival artistic director and Anurag Kashyap. Kiran Rao will be releasing the film, in association with UTV Pictures on July 19.

Plutarch wrote a paradox in his book, Life of Theseus, “If an object has any or all of its parts replaced, does it remain the same object?” which Gandhi found as a powerful theme for his film. The critically acclaimed film will make its way to cinemas with a limited release in Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and Kolkata. However, passionate fans who desperately want to see the film can vote online for their respective cities on the film’s website. The city with the most votes will have Ship of Theseus come and blow them away!
