From Pink to Gandhari, Taapsee Pannu’s has steadily built a reputation as one of the most dependable and bankable stars in the industry today, proving that she can lead a film on her own merit and draw audiences through her performance. Her latest release, Gandhari, emerged as a global hit on Netflix, trending as the No. 1 non-English film in 17 countries and further strengthening her position as a leading force in female-led cinema.
Over the years, the actor has consistently taken on roles that allow her to lead stories and bring female-led narratives to the forefront. With the success of Gandhari, pursuit of building a position where she can shoulder a film on her own terms has come into sharper focus.
When asked about the success of Gandhari being a culmination of her journey since Pink, Taapsee opened up about the relentless work that has gone into building this position. She said, “Well, it’s been a long journey. It’s been relentless work being put in it to reach this stage, because for how long you want to be at the mercy of luck only? It can’t be the only factor deciding which film I get. I cannot be at the mercy of my heroes to feel okay to let me be in a film. And that’s been my quest since Pink, because I tasted blood way too early in my career of what happens when you lead a film, or, you know, when you’re not a secondary character in a film. My vision became very clear from there onwards that eventually I do want to achieve a position where the producers think and believe that if she’s there in a film, then it’s worth putting our money in it.”
Taapsee’s response reflects the clarity with which she has approached her career since Pink. Rather than leaving her choices entirely to chance, she has worked towards creating opportunities that allow her to lead stories and be recognised as a driving force behind a film. The success of Gandhari adds another chapter to that journey, underlining the importance of building trust with audiences and the industry over time.
For Taapsee, the goal extends beyond delivering a successful film; it is about reaching a point where her name and presence inspire confidence in producers to back a story.
