Teri Meri Kahaani is the big Bollywood release this week and the movie, which sees Priyanka Chopra paired opposite Shahid Kapoor for the second time, is set between three time periods, 1910, 1960 and 2012.

Three time periods, means an excuse for three different fashion styles and with the baadshah of Bollywood fashion, Manish Malhotra, behind the costume design we at Bollyspice thought it would only be fair to look at the popular styles of these eras.

1910 Fashion

This picture of an Indian lady in 1910 shows the style of sari that would have been worn in that era.

In the movie, in 1910, Priyanka Chopra takes on the role of Punjabi girl Aradhana and is seen sporting a number of Punjabi style colourful suits. As Priyanka Chopra told the media playing a girl from that era proved tough because, “there was no reference point for it except some books. Kunal managed to get some sketches of the women from that time and Manish Malhotra designed my costumes by looking at those pictures.”

The trend towards looser and lighter clothing became popular in 1910 and this can be seen by the loose fitting Punjabi suits Priyanka’s character Aradhana sports in the movie.

1960s Fashion

The 1960s was known as the decade of non-conformity, rebellion and youth and this was reflected in the changing style of the clothing throughout this decade.

Teri Meri Kahaani looks at the first half of the decade, 1960, which saw women, especially in the west, mimic the elegant style of Jacqueline Kennedy. In India the 60’s were an era of anarkali suits, fitted kurta’s, churidaars and sarees in the style, shown in the picture above, sported by the actress Mumtaz.

In the movie, Priyanka Chopra plays the role of an actress called Rukhsar and is seen sporting some vintage style 1960’s clothing similar to the sari’s worn by actresses in that decade.

2012 Fashion

Fashion has completely changed now from 1910 and the 1960’s, it has become more personalised and is now a way to express ones tastes and personality rather than for practical reasons. As with the other two decades there are trends but they are more varied and change far more frequently thanks to the variety of fashion weeks we have.

In Indian clothing the anarkali and churidaar styles of the 1960’s have been reinvented for this decade and are proving popular amongst women.

Teri Meri Kahaani for its third era looks to the present time and sees Priyanka Chopra play the UK based student Radha. There are many popular trends for this season in the UK at the moment. The main trends for 2012 are colour blocking, bold prints, futuristic prints, pastel shades and colours, metallic basics and big silhouettes. Nowadays women have the freedom to choose which trends they want to follow rather than having to conform to what society dictates.

Teri Meri Kahaani released on the 22nd June 2012 and is a romantic drama directed by Kunal Kohli.
