The award season is in full swing with our favorite stars and films being awarded for their uniqueness and effort. One of those films is The Dirty Picture, especially with Vidya Balan sweeping up the awards for best actress but this is not the only success the film is having at this moment in time. The Balaji/Alt Entertainment produced film was released at the start of December competing with big films like Desi Boyz, Ladies Vs. Ricky Bahl and Don 2 but it continues to fight its corner in the cinema houses.

As most will be aware The Dirty Picture broke cinematic history for the biggest profits for any female led film but also one of the biggest earners in 2011. This was such a great feat for the team given the modest budget and modest screen count but this does not seem to be a hurdle for the film even eight weeks into its release.  Not many films manage to stay in the cinema for this long but the hype that surrounded the film seems to have benefited the team with demand for some sexy silk entertainment remaining high. Last week screen count was estimated around 50 screens but with the publicity surrounding the award season the decision was made to increase screen count to over 150.

Girish Johar of Balaji Motion Pictures stated last week that, “with The Dirty Picture winning/nominated for coveted awards, it was decided to capitalize on the tremendous mileage that it was getting already. Besides, there’s no prominent release this week, so The Dirty Picture should benefit for this reason as well.”

With the release of Agneepath this week we can expect that The Dirty Picture will lose its dominating power as the Dharma Production has already topped records set by The Dirty Picture. Controversy has never left the 80s based hit with criticism being aimed at Priyanka Chopra for dressing up as Vidya’s character in a fat suit at a recent award show. Despite the reaction from fans Vidya appeared to take it all in good humor. With the award season continuing we can expect to hear much more surrounding the film.
