This 2008 motion picture was Murudadoss’ Hindi version of the 2005 Tamil film Ghajini, which was directed by – Murudadoss! Experiencing a moment of De Ja Vu? Don’t worry apart from the same female lead that is where the similarities end. Unless you happen to Christopher Nolan’s Momento from which Ghajini is inspired.
Murudadoss’ action thriller explored the life of wealthy entrepreneur Sanjay Singhania, a man who suffered from anterograde amnesia following a violent encounter in which he loses the love of this life – Kalpana. Out to seek revenge for Kalpana’a murder through the aid of instant pictures and permanent tattoos, Ghajini was 2008’s top grossing film. Released on 25th December with an estimated 1500 prints from which 213 were for the overseas market, Ghajini had 650 paid previews resulting in revenue of Rs 70 million. Further revenue was generated when the domestic distribution rights were sold for Rs 530 million and home video rights, overseas rights and satellite rights for sold for a further Rs 500 million.
Critically the film was widely acclaimed. Aly Kassam commented that Ghajini was a masala flick that the public would absolutely love when it first release. And love it you did – this is why Ghajini grossed 117,48,22,756 and is number 3 in the top ten films of the decade.
