No matter what you are reading about the film’s fate, the new Sunny Deol starrer Jaat directed by Gopichand Malineni, has opened to shockingly low numbers across the country.

And the footfalls and eyeballs have not improved on Day 2.

A stumped trade analyst who doesn’t want to be named concedes it is a setback, “Especially since you say Sunny received Rs 50 crores as his fee. That pushes the film’s budget close to Rs 300-350 crores. Recovery of such an astronomical amount is impossible for a film that has opened on the lower side.”

The shocking box office numbers for Jaat raise issues about Sunny Deol’s feasibility at the box office. When was the last time he had a hit outside the Gadar franchise? Before Gadar 2, Sunny was seen in R Balki’s Chup: Revenge Of The Artiste, another fine film which bit the dust.

One now hears from a reliable source in Hyderabad that the plan of turning Jaat into a franchise–on the lines of the Reacher series–are now being re-examined.
