Former VJ Lekha Washington may have been born in Chennai but she is a true citizen of the world having a mixture of Indian, Italian and Burmese antecedents. She is very pleased with the way her southern career is going and with her recent movies into Bollywood. “I am happy that I am working with some of the best talents in Tollywood so early,” she says, “I am equally happy with the offers I have been getting from Bollywood.” Lekha is currently working on the Hindi movie Peter Gaya Kaam Se with Rajiv Khandelwal, in which she plays an undercover agent skilled in martial arts.
In the south, she is about to have a meaty showing in the very talented Simbu’s Kettavan. Lekha, a Steely Dan fan, is clearly attracted to artists beyond the mainstream. Simbu plays three roles in this tour de force which is said to be loosely based on Bachna Ae Haseeno and has been in the making for quite some time. As recently as June, Simbu declared he was tired of the project and had walked away from it – but now it is nearly ready for release, ahead of its original 2010 schedule.
But Lekha is already looking forward to the future with a great prospect in Rakkozhi ahead of her. “I have Rakkozhi with Jai lined up,” she confirms, “We will start shooting in December and I’m damn kicked about the project. Jai is a very talented actor and I’m sure the film will be great fun. As far as everything else goes, well, whatever will be, will be.”
