Eternal beauty Zeenat Aman, who gave numerous groovy songs during her time, has become quite an inspiration for today’s actresses. Close on the heels of Deepika Padukaone’s rendition of her Dum Maaro Dum, item girl Yana Gupta is all set to perform to Laila O Laila in Chalo Dilli. And this time, with this 70’s bombshell’s consent.
Zeenat, who was aghast at the way her iconic song from Hare Rama Hare Krishna had been remixed, had said that she couldn’t bring herself to see the video. “Frankly I was deeply disappointed by the remix. I haven’t seen it. But I did hear the song. And it just doesn’t sound right. In the original, there was a certain innocence in Asha Bhonsle’s voice and also in the lyrics. What I’ve heard here just left me cold,” she said, highly disappointed and unhappy with the fact that the original artists involved were not consulted.
Bearing this in mind, female lead Lara Dutta showed the yesteryear actress the song performed by Miss Babuji-Zara-Dheere-Chalo girl Yana Gupta. Happy with the fact that they had stuck to the original Qurbani song and not made any alterations, she has given them the go-ahead signal. Needless to say, the makers are relieved. Lara, who is co-producing the film along with husband Mahesh Bhupathi under their home production, was ecstatic. As for Yana, she is pretty excited about the song as well. “I’ve always been a fan of Zeenat Aman and the song Laila Main Laila. And I always enjoy doing item songs. But this turned out to be an out-of-body experience for me. I’m looking forward to performing it live on stage after the film releases.” So much so that she has even asked for her house to be done in the same manner in which the set has been made!
Remakes of old songs have always given everyone nightmares and not without reason. Hardly any remixes/renditions have done justice to their old versions. But considering that Miss Zeenat herself seems pretty happy with the output of this famous song, this new Laila must just turn out to be as sexy and classy as the old one.
