The inspiring journey of a ragtag group of friends with larger-than-life dreams, Superboys of Malegaon, is ready for its close up. The critically acclaimed outstanding film is set to fly into theatres on February 28th. Directed by Reema Kagti, the film features the exceptional Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Shashank Arora in pivotal roles.
An ode to Indian Cinema, Superboys of Malegaon brings a cinematic spotlight on the small town of Malegaon in Maharashtra. The film is based on the real-life of Nasir Shaikh, an amateur filmmaker from Malegaon. The town’s residents look to Bollywood for a much-needed escape, which forms the story’s base. Nasir gets inspired to make a film for the people of Malegaon, by the people of Malegaon. He bands his ragtag group of friends to bring his visions to life. But then egos clash, ideas differ, and the team fades to black. Life moves on, but then for one last film, one last hope, they come together again to make Superman of Malegaon.
Recently, the film’s producer, Zoya Akhtar, opened up about picking up the deeply resonating story of Superboys of Malegaon as her next project. When asked why this story stuck with her, Akhtar said, “Nasir—the filmmaker, he is truly unique. He started the whole DIY filmmaking phenomena – back then none of us could’ve imagined that one could make a film with such limited resources, we know the effort it takes, and he started with so little. Yet, through sheer hustle, gathering friends, and pouring his heart into the story, he brought his idea to life. He put Malegaon on the map, and that is truly inspiring.”
Adding, “I think there are multi-layered messages in this film. The biggest one for me is the magic of the movies. But I am from the industry, so I respond to that. I respond to the artist in them the most. Movies lift you up. They take you beyond your reality. They make dreams come true. I think that’s one message that comes out. The message of friendship, their bond, and what you can do for another.”

An Amazon MGM Studios, Excel Entertainment, and Tiger Baby production, Superboys of Malegaon is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Zoya Akhtar, and Reema Kagti. Written by Varun Grover, the film will be released in theaters on February 28 across India, the US, Canada, the UK, UAE, Australia, and New Zealand. It is in fact going to open in over 250 theaters in the US alone which is amazing for an independent movie.
