‘3 Idiots’ original screenplay – Now on book stands

You have read the original book, appreciated the movie, now the fans of the cult movie 3 Idiots have another reason to rejoice and relive the magic of the movie.

The original 3 Idiots script book was unveiled on 7th June amidst much fanfare at the Landmark store in Mumbai. Apart from the original screenplay, the book also features deleted scenes, anecdotes on casting process, character sketches and exciting essays by Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi. Titled The Original Screenplay, the book is priced at INR 495.

An adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone, the film is about the journey and their experiences of 3 friends at IIT.
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani & ably supported by R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, the film was the highest grosser of 2009. It recently won maximum number of awards including the Best Film and Best Director Award at the IIFA Awards, 2010 ceremony held in Sri Lanka.

“The book is the screenplay of the film 3 Idiots. The screenplay is not only be read to understand the film, but reading a screenplay itself is an enjoyment,” Vidhu Vinod Chopra, producer of the film, said post the book launch.

Smriti Kiran, former journalist and producer, compiled all the content for the book. The book is published by OM Books International who are known for their previous works like Shah Rukh Can the official biography by Mushtaq Shiekh and The Name is Rajinikanth by Gayathri Sreekanth.

The trend of publishing script books is however not a new idea. Apart from 3 Idiots, script books of classic films Awaara, Mughal-E-Azam, Taj Mahal, as well as recent hits like MunnaBhai MBBS have also been earlier introduced in the market.

Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who believes that Indian film culture should be preserved for future generations, is subsequently looking at documenting some of Guru Dutt’s works namely Chuadhvin Ka Chand, Kaagaz Ke Phool and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam.
