Bollywood’s latest playback male singer Himesh Reshammiya has been blessed with tremendous success this past year. After gaining much popularity from the hit reality series ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa,’ he has decided to give music an unusual twist. As a music director, it is self-evident how immensely well he has done. However, as a singer we are not too certain. Realizing that this well-known artist brings eclectic sounds in Bollywood’s music industry; does it now seem as if those same sounds have become repetitive? The same styles of singing and similar beats are now becoming nothing more than a nuisance to music lovers. The music business has had its share of artists of their times. From Kumar Sanu to Udit Narayan. From Shaan to Sonu Nigam; it is evident that Himesh is on his way to becoming the next big star and that itself isn’t too honoring for our industry.
A new genre of music seemed interesting when first introduced. It’s a shame even youngsters are not exactly joyous with songs that repeat a consisting line 50+ times nor is it pleasant to the ears hearing a 24/7 nasal congested voice.
Lacking commendable vocal cords is just one out of two weaknesses. Even Reshammiya’s music direction is wearing off quick. Be it ‘Jhalak Dikhlaja,’ ‘Zara Jhoom Jhoom,’ ‘Humko Deewana Kar Gaye’ or ‘Ahista Ahista,’ it misses variety.
Recently, in this years IIFA awards Himesh was awarded Best Playback Singer [male] for ‘Aashiq Banaya Aapne’ striking out artists such as Sonu Nigam [Piya Bole], Rahat Fateh Ali Khan [Jiya Dhadak], Aatif Aslam [Who Lamhe], and Shaan & KK [Dus Bahane]. Is Himesh considered greater than these exceptional artists? Does he deserve such high recognition when it has been said his work is inspired by Atif Aslam in the first place?
It is no surprise a performer as compassionate as Sonu Nigam is to say Himesh is no good. In a recent interview he tells us “I don’t think Himesh is a good singer and if he thinks he is a good singer, he is lying to himself.” OUCH! I suppose it had to come out from someone. Nevertheless, Reshammiya is here to stay for at least another one to two years. Yes, we know.. bare with it!
