Do Ajnabee, Ek Haalat, Phir Dosti, Phir Problem solved‘, (translation: Two strangers, one situation, then friendship, then problem solved) – a dialogue from Johar productions movie Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, which went to explain that any two people who are in a similar situation are best to acknowledge each other’s problems and solve it. Anjaana Anjaani relies heavily on this track, wrapped in ‘been-there-done-that’ trendy Manish Malhotra fashion, set in a canvas of locations between earth, sea and sky and presents a love story which the creators tag as “greatest” and “strangest”. Is it really, what it claims to be? Read further.

Anjaana Anjaani is about a San Francisco girl Kiara (Priyanka Chopra) sulking over a broken heart, and a NY boy Akash (Ranbir Kapoor) ruing over a failed business. The best way out according to the like-minded characters is suicide by jumping off a bridge. Destiny decides to meddle, and the two end up on the same bridge. They team up and gratefully help each other with their respective suicide plans, in more ways than one, that aren’t worth mentioning here or anywhere else. Unsuccessful attempts later, they agree to postpone plans for around next 20 days leading up to New year’s eve and instead indulge in some unfulfilled wishes like a dip in Atlantic ocean, or life on the untraveled road (i.e. road trip). Where the journey takes them from there is the rest of the film.

From the first look to the dialogue promos, networking sites were abuzz with word that the film had uncanny resemblances to French movie La Fille Sur Le Pont (Girl on the Bridge) or Telugu film Itlu Sravani Subramanyam. At this point, I’d like to add a few more names like Bucket List, Before Sunrise, Serendipity. Scenes haven’t been deliberately lifted from the names mentioned, but the treatment leaves a sense of D
