Following in the legendary Kishore Kumar’s footsteps, his contemporary and legendary singer Asha Bhosle will also now be seen acting in a film. Convinced by her sister Lata Mangeshkar and son Anand, Asha Bhosle (76) will be seen in the recently launched Maaee where she will play the main role.
The story of Maaee tells the tale of a mother abandoned by her only son and so goes to live with her daughter and son-in-law. Joining Asha Bhosle will be Padmini Kolhapure (Insaaf Ka Tarazu, Prem Rog, Souten), who was a popular 80s actress and marks her comeback to mainstream Hindi cinema and interestingly Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar were her father’s first cousins.
A number of singers have made the leap into acting from singing to varying degrees of success, notables include: Sonu Nigam, Himesh Reshammiya and Lucky Ali. However, Asha Bhosle has gone on record to say that: “Singing is my first love. Acting is not my forte. Maaee will be my first and last movie as an actor.” Asha also revealed that she doesn’t enjoy many of today’s Bollywood films, as she finds them emotionless and artificial, but did like Munna Bhai MBBS!
Maaee will be directed by Mahesh Godiyal and co-produced by Subhash Dawar (Alliance Entertainment) and Nitin Shankar (Rhythm Divine Entertainment Pvt Ltd), Ram Kapoor has been cast to play Padmini Kolhapure’s husband, Navin Kaushik will play Asha’s son and Cadbury girl Shivani Joshi will play the role of her grand-daughter.
The film’s first shot was graced by filmmaker and producer friend Yash Chopra and will be shot entirely in Mumbai. For all you Asha Bholse fans who are wondering how her role will pan out, Asha has assured everyone that she will be herself while enacting the role.
