Aamir Khan’s nephew Imraan Khan marks his 26th birthday today at the end of his first year in Bollywood with the success of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and the disappointment of Kidnap behind him. American-born Imraan is currently filming Luck with Danny Denzongpa and Shruti Hassan, and Delhi Belly with Shenaz Treasurywala.
Imraan is choosing his career route very carefully, no doubt with advice from his more famous uncle. After the romantic lead of JTYJN and the villainy of Kidnap, he is moving onto an all-out action comedy in Delhi Belly about a guy who thinks a little bit differently to the rest of us.
Athough Imraan is an American citizen, he has strong views on the deficit of leadership in Indian politics, views not so dissimilar to his uncle: “I believe that only voting can help us throw out the corrupt politicians and give a chance to the young leaders who want to bring about a change,” he says, “After the 26/11 attacks, a few people suggested that we stop paying the taxes but that is not going to help.”
Imran’s birthday has given him a chance to pause and reflect on his first year of stardom as he passes the day with his girlfriend Avantika: “In six months after Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, so much has changed, 2008 was the most exciting year of my life. I feel I’ve grown up by a couple of years,” he explains.
