Meenakshi Sheshadri was a popular leading lady in the 1970s and 80s. Her hits included Subhash Ghai’s Hero, Shahenshah with Amitabh Bachchan and Damini for which she received widespread recognition.

She then quit Bollywood to marry and migrate to the US. Now at age 62, Meenakshi wants to make a comeback.

In a heartfelt video which she has posted from Boston the actress says, “After 30 long years, I have relocated back to my Karmabhoomi, Mumbai, India and have stepped once again into the entertainment industry with hope, passion and positivity.I’m really looking forward to meaningful opportunities, whether it’s a lead role, supporting character or even a short show. And it doesn’t matter as long as it’s an impactful performance. It could be films or OTT shows. I want to explore roles that challenge me as an artist and help me discover new dimensions of my craft.”

But the film industry has no comeback options for actresses beyond a certain age. Before Meenakshi, Sonam Khan who made her debut in a Yash Chopra film in the 1980s, married migrated and returned with the intention of working again in Bollywood. No offers came her way.

Rohit Jugraj, a prominent Punjabi-Hindi director feels Bollywood is not kind to actresses beyond a certain age. “Our 60-year old superstars want actresses their own age to play their mother. That’s the sad truth.”
