Veteran actor Nana Patekar was cremated with full state honours late on Thursday night, October 8, 2026, at his Donje farmhouse near Khadakwasla in Pune. The 75-year-old legendary performer passed away earlier that day in Goa after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest.
Nana Patekar’s last rites were held late at night , as a significant amount of time had already passed following his demise early that morning in Goa, and the family faced logistical delays in transporting his mortal remains to Pune.
The veteran actor passed away at his Goa residence at around 5:20 AM on Thursday, October 8, after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest.
Nana’s son Malhar Patekar explains, “He passed away so early in the day, we decided it was best to proceed with the cremation on the same day rather than delaying it further into the next morning. The funeral was originally scheduled to take place at 4:00 PM on Thursday. However, the timeline shifted significantly due to several standard procedures and travel constraints.”
Following his cardiac arrest, doctors at Manipal Hospital in Goa attempted CPR for 45 minutes before declaring him deceased. Standard medico-legal procedures and an autopsy were then conducted in Goa. His mortal remains had to be flown from Goa to the Pune International Airport, where Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other officials paid their initial tributes in the evening.
From the airport, his remains were transported by road to his farmhouse located in Donje village, on the outskirts of Pune. By the time the final journey concluded and all preparations were in place, it was late at night. The pyre was ultimately lit by Malhar at approximately 11:30 PM.
In recognition of his massive contributions to Hindi and Marathi cinema, as well as Marathi theatre, the Maharashtra government accorded him a state funeral, which featured a ceremonial salute by the police. The last rites were performed at his farmhouse following his previously expressed wishes.
In a poignant detail, Patekar had already stored the dry wood at his Pune property for his eventual cremation.
His son, Malhar Patekar, lit the funeral pyre amid chants of “Nana Amar Rahe” (Long Live Nana) from thousands of mourning fans. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, and several state ministers paid their respects at the venue. Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tribute to the mortal remains at the Pune airport.
Longtime colleagues and industry friends like Jackie Shroff, director Mehul Kumar, and co-founder of the Naam Foundation Makarand Anaspure were present to bid him adieu.
