There are not many actors out there who can say that their first innings in Bollywood began with a smash hit and that their performance was one of THE highlights of the film. Omi Vaidya is one of those actors, with his outstanding performance as Chatur Ramalingam or “Silencer” in the super hit film 3 Idiots. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film also starred R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, and oh yeah… Aamir Khan! Omi received critical acclaim and rave reviews from audiences for his performance that is now considered one of the most memorable characters in the film. In fact, he told us in an earlier interview, “When I went to the premiere I was like, okay, I know what I am going to say to the reporters on the red carpet, but I did not have any interaction with anybody. I just walked by like I was a guest because no one knew me, but when the screening actually finished it took me an hour and half to just get out of the theatre! People kept coming up to me saying ‘who are you’ or ‘what a great job you did’. It was phenomenal.”
If that was not cool enough, now we find out that a documentary was filmed about his trip from the world of Hollywood to Bollywood. Omi told us exclusively, “My friends asked me if they could do a documentary about my journey into Bollywood. I told them no, but they just wouldn’t listen.” What came of those four friends, Bill Bowles, Kenny Meehan, Matt McCroskey and Tyler MacNiven not listening to him is the documentary titled Big In Bollywood. According to the Big In Bollywood website, “This documentary came from a meeting of the minds between fellow filmmakers, and a realization that something amazing was about to happen in Mumbai. Omi was describing to us how 3 Idiots was turning out to be the most anticipated film of the year in India. And we all looked at each other and realized that we had to go to India and watch this all unfold.”
Omi describes the documentary as, “A comical and sometimes irreverent look of the current state of Bollywood from an outsider’s perspective.” Filmed while Omi was in India on a press tour that had tens of thousands of people coming to see the 4 Idiots, plus his appearance and wins at all the award shows, it is an inside look at what happens when you become a star in Bollywood!
Big In Bollywood is premiering at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles at Arclight Hollywood April 16th! If you are there be sure to check it out!
