Preity Zinta has adopted a whole class full of children – thirty-four orphan girls to be precise – from the Mother Miracle orphanage in Hrishikesh. She did this in honour of her 34th birthday. “Yes, I have adopted them and will be completely looking after their education, food, clothes, etc,” she admits, “It`s an amazing feeling to be part of their lives. I’m going to make it a point to visit them at least twice a year. They are my children, my responsibility now.”
At first, Preity was going to treat herself to a new imported car for her birthday but her social conscience came to the fore and she realised she could do something much more worthwhile with the same amount of money. “The horrors of female foeticide and child abuse are not just headlines for me,” she explains, “These 34 girls are just the beginning, I am going to adopt a couple more on every birthday.” Although the last decade has seen some improvement, female foeticide has been estimated at about a million each year in India.
Preity has two very interesting films lined up – Har Pal with Eesha Koppikar, Dino Morea and Shiney Ahuja; and she is appearing in an item number in Main Aur Mrs Khanna which stars Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor. After her hard work in movies such as Heaven on Earth, The Last Lear, and Heroes in 2008, she has said she is looking to do some fun movies in 2009.
