Alia Bhatt is in her Action era, and she is killing it! Along with Sharvari, the duo is headlining Yash Raj Films’ first female-led Spy Universe flick. Titled Alpha, the film also features Bobby Deol in his villain era and Anil Kapoor in, as only he can, his fierce character era. The crowd is going wild after seeing the trailer for Alpha, with the stunning visuals and adrenaline-pumping sequences taken up to 11. Add in the humor, the intense action, and unexpected twists, we think will be thrilling to watch on the big screen. Fans cannot wait for the Alpha of it all to hit July 3rd.
The full story is being kept under wraps, but what we do know is that Alia is an assassin, trained from childhood by the dark character played with relish by Bobby Deol. The story turns to a battle to defeat the bad guy and save the world, with Sharvari and Anil Kapoor joining Alia, aka Sita’s fight. There is also a glimpse of character you will immediately recognize in his eyes, but you have to wait and watch!
Talking to Femina about what drew her to the film, Alia said, “There have been female action characters within films driven by men, but there’s never been a story that was told where the protagonist is a female character, and where the storytelling is engaging you to the point where it doesn’t matter what the gender is. I could be completely wrong, but I believe, deep in my heart, that if the story is powerful and if the story connects, it doesn’t matter who’s leading it, or whether the protagonist is male or female. There have been female-led successful films, but in this particular genre? It’s historically not fully worked. I really liked the story! I thought it was new. It’s something that I hadn’t done as an actor before, and I had not seen in recent years. Actually, it’s not just me, it’s Sharvari as well! Two women. Even that was exciting to me. I found a really good vibe with Sharvari. I also wanted to have fun at the movies. Alpha is actually a popcorn entertainment, a fun film. Very sort of specific genre with storytelling at the heart of it.”
Recently, Bobby Deol shared his thoughts on the film’s concept, “It is quite amazing that we are making an action film in India, like Alpha, featuring two girls doing action on screen. I like Alpha a lot because it is new, it is refreshing, and a new visual for the audience to watch in theatres.”
The actor, especially, had praise for Alia, “Alia is one of the most hardworking and sincere actors I’ve worked with. She comes to the set completely prepared, deeply invested in every scene. She has never done this kind of action before, and I was amazed seeing how prepared she was for the shoot. I could see she was giving her all because action is hard to pull off, and she went for it.”
Alia was also full of praise for Bobby, “I had the best time working with him because he is like a little student in this school of cinema, even today after so many years, and I’m just like him – a student who is just happy and grateful to be on sets, shooting. When we were doing our scenes together, I realised that he could do something that’s so unassumingly brilliant that even he was oblivious to his craft. That’s how good he is! It didn’t feel like he was ever trying to act. He is a natural. And I think he has done something very special in Alpha.”
Bobby Deol added, “Adi (Aditya Chopra) and the director Shiv Rawail had a clear vision that action should look real and raw. So, it was a tough shoot for both of us, and I’m glad we have a film that everyone should sit back, relax, and hopefully enjoy thoroughly.”
Sharvari said, “Alpha is a very exciting project. What challenged me was the genre of the film, which is action; this genre is something that I have not done before. Though I did one film, Vedaa, in a similar space, it was more of survival action. ALPHA is obviously a more sleek and stylish action.”
Adding, “It truly is the first women’s action film. And I think that it will break a lot of glass ceilings. So, I’m excited and a little bit nervous about the film. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I’m really looking forward to bringing this film to the theatres, especially because it is the first spy universe film with two women leading it.”
Speaking of ACTION, the acclaimed action director Craig Macrae, who worked on the film, was full of praise for both Alia and Sharvari’s work on Alpha in a recent interview.
Macrae said, “What sets Alia Bhatt apart from those other female stars is that I think her work ethic is absolutely incredible. She’s really put in a lot of time and a lot of effort into preparing for Alpha. She was really dedicated to the movie, and I think that’s going to be the thing that really makes a huge difference in her on-screen presence.” Adding, “Not only just for the action preparation, she obviously did a lot of work for the preparation as the character as well. She’s one of those people who you can really feel is willing to put in the amount of work that is required and then some, to go above and beyond what’s needed for the film.”
Macrae revealed the work the Alpha stars put into making this film the best: “Alia and Sharvari were absolutely incredible for this movie. The preparation that they put into it, the work that they put into preparing for this movie, physically and with their skills training and stunt training, was absolutely incredible. It’s very rare to find people who are willing to put in the amount of time and effort that Alia and Sharvari put into this movie.”
