Rajasthani artist and rapper Rapperiya Balam whose real name is Ashok Bishnoi, recently posted a video on Instagram claiming that his popular track “Shoorveer” was featured in Mirzapur: The Movie without his permission or credit. He originally created and composed “Shoorveer” in 2020 as a respectful tribute to the legendary warrior Maharana Pratap. The filmmakers used the track during an action-heavy sequence glorifying modern-day gangsters , specifically for Divyenndu’s character, Munna Bhaiya.
Baalam stated that using a historical tribute to score scenes of crime and violence felt highly disrespectful to the legacy of Rajasthan.
Following the viral outcry, the music label Trouper Records (which originally released the track) stepped in to clarify the legalities. They issued an official statement confirming that “Shoorveer” was legally and officially licensed to Excel Entertainment for in-film use. Because independent artists often assign the commercial rights of their music to labels, the production house bypassed Baalam directly by legally securing the rights from the label holding them.
While the usage appears legally sound, it has sparked a massive online debate regarding artist consent, creative respect, and how independent art is treated by big commercial studios
