Another year gone by and another lot of impressive newbies have arrived on the Bollywood scene to make their mark. Here are the Top 5 Female Debutants for the year 2012.
5. Esha Gupta – Jannat 2
At no. 5 we have the dusky beauty who won everyone’s heart with the notorious ‘serial kisser’ in not one of but two films in her very first year. Esha won Miss Photogenic in the Femina Miss India contest in 2007 and featured in the Kingfisher Calendar in 2010, before being spotted and starring in her debut film. She had one of the busiest debut years with not one but three films, Jannat 2, Raaz 3 and Chakravyuh. Just when we thought she’d get the ‘Bhatt girl’ title she surprised us in the last release, a Prakash Jha directorial. Thus far she’s gotten mixed reviews for her performance however her appearance impressed us enough to warrant a position on this countdown.
4. Yami Gautam – Vicky Donor
To star in a film in which the producer and fellow lead actor are themselves debutantes is no easy decision to make however Yami Gautam’s gamble paid off. Her performance as Ashima Roy Arora in the controversially themed Vicky Donor was both mature and delightful. She had an interesting 2012 with a super hit release in Malayalam also. However not to worry she isn’t abandoning her dreams of being a Hindi film star as she returns with another John Abraham production, Hamara Bajaj which is a film by the team of Vicky Donor. She’ll be co-starring with Ayushman once again. We will then see her in Ali Zafar starrer Aman Ki Aasha directed by E.Niwas (De Taali, Shool & My Name is Anthony Gonsalves) and produced by Neeraj Pandey (A Wednesday). She’s clearly raring to go and by the looks of her forthcoming films there plenty of makers lined up outside her door. Here’s wishing her a rocking 2013!
3. Huma Qureshi
Daughter of a restaurateur and sister of actor Saqib Saleem (Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge), Huma Qureshi is in at no. 3 for her various performances in 2012. She had an unconventional start in films being spotted by Anurag Kashyap in a commercial before landing the role of Mohsina (Faisal Khan’s love interest) in critically and commercially acclaimed series Gangs of Wasseypur. Huma featured in a small role in British drama Trishna however returned to screens with a full-length role in Sameer Sharma’s Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana. 2013 looks like a busy year for her with Ekta Kapoor’s Ek Thi Daayan and Nikhil Advani’s D-Day. Having already proven her versatility to an extent in her very first year we’re eager to see her career unfold.
2. Diana Penty
When the loveable, traditional yet somehow modern ‘Meera’ rolled onto our screens in the form of model turned actress Diana Penty, we just couldn’t help but take an interest! We loved her as the shy girl-next-door in Cocktail, holding her own against the likes of Deepika Padukone and Saif-Ali Khan. Whilst there’s plenty of rumours doing the rounds, Diana hasn’t signed any films for the New Year as of yet but of course she continues with her various endorsement obligations. She has admitted that now her attention will be solely on films. Buzz is that she was considering a Tamil film and also was in line for a role in A R Murgadoss’s (Ghajini) next which is the remake of his Tamil film Thupakki. For now we’ll have to hold tight and wait for her to sign on the dotted line however no doubt until then she belongs at this no 2. position.
1. Ileana D’cruz – Barfi!
Finally at numero uno we have Southern actress lleana D’Cruz who took time from her superstar duties down south to win our hearts as the quirky, cute yet heartbroken Shruti in Anurag Basu’s Barfi! She held her own opposite actors Priyanka Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor, displaying the lost in love woman perfectly. Seems like Ileana was in line for a Hindi debut for sometime having been considered for Boney Kapoor’s Wanted to essay the role she did originally in the Telugu version. In the New Year she stars in Raj Kumar Santoshi’s Phata Poster Nikla Hero opposite Shahid Kapoor. Buzz is she’s also considering Tiger Shroff’s debut film however no confirmation has been received yet. She continues to be loyal to her South fans and has multiple projects lined up there in the new year. No doubt we’re eager to see how she follows the Barfi act which definitely won’t be no easy feat.
And with that we some up the various achievement of the female debutants of 2012 who won our hearts. Time to see if they live up to their impressive debuts and follow the act with as notable films and performance.
