Shahid’s transformation into Haider

Hitting theaters on October 2nd is Haider Vishal Bhardwaj’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’. To transform into the title role, star Shahid Kapoor had to not get into the mind and the skin of the iconic character he also had to change his look and that included shaving off his hair.

Director Vishal Bhardwaj said, “Shahid goes through an emotional journey in the film, where he starts from being a simple student in search of his father, grows his hair long and learns that his father has been probably killed and then almost becomes mad to finally taking his revenge. When he came to know that I was adapting Hamlet, he was keen to play the character of Hamlet, who is Haider in our film and within a second I asked him, ‘Will you go bald or not?’That was a prerequisite for the role.”

Haider – a young man returns home to Kashmir on receiving news of his father’s disappearance. Not only does he learn that security forces have detained his father for harboring militants, but that his mother is in a relationship with his very own uncle. Intense drama follows between mother and son as both struggle to come to terms with news of his father’s death. Soon Haider learns that his uncle is responsible for the gruesome murder, what follows is his journey to avenge his father’s death.
