Legendary actress Sharmila Tagore will be attending the Edinburgh International Film Festival in Scotland from 18-20 June. The actress, whose magical work with directors such as Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatap and Anup Singh will be coming to see a retrospective of her work in Bengal independent cinema at the St John’s Church Hall as part of the Festival.

“We’re totally thrilled!” exclaimed Festival director Mark Cousins, “She can tell us first hand about Indian cinema’s Chekhov, Satyajit Ray, and the great Tapan Sinha. She can open a window of the world on the great Bengali films. In our wee makeshift Paradise Movie Hall. How great is that? This is what film festivals are for.”

The films being shown at the festival within the Festival are by Satyajit Ray (Devi; Days And Nights In The Forest), Ritwik Ghatak (The Cloud Capped Star; A River Called Titas), Tapan Sinha (Nirjan Saikate; Wheel Chair) and Anup Singh (The Name of a River).

Sharmila will already be in the country, as she will be filming in London in May with her daughter Soha Ali Khan in a currently unnamed movie by Sangeeta Datta. She recently appeared in 8×10 Tasveer with Akshay Kumar and in 2007 was seen alongside her son Saif Ali Khan in Eklavya: The Royal Guard. Sharmila recently won an award for Excellence in Creativity from the FICCI Ladies Organisation.
