Six years on, the Big Bull is still charging. The Hansal Mehta’s hit series, Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, which featured Pratik Gandhi and an ensemble that included Shreya Dhanwanthary, Anant Mahadevan, Hemant Kher, Chirag Vohra and the late Satish Kaushik was and still is a huge hit.
Gandhi’s portrayal of Harshad Mehta went on to be a career-defining act that made him a household name overnight. Six years later, viewers keep returning for the razor-sharp writing, the relentless pace, and Hansal Mehta’s creative and directoral flair.
A special video was released to celebrate the six years of Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story that relives the series’ most iconic moments and its unforgettable theme, and fans responded with a surge of nostalgia. Many called it the benchmark for OTT storytelling.
Sharing the video on Instagram, the makers wrote, “The Big Bull’s run continues…” The comments filled up fast with viewers calling it one of the best series ever made.
Directed by Hansal Mehta and produced by Applause Entertainment, the series premiered on SonyLIV on October 9, 2020. Based on Sucheta Dalal and Debashis Basu’s book The Scam: Who Won Who Lost Who Got Away, it traced the meteoric rise and spectacular fall of Harshad Mehta, whose dealings shook the Indian stock market in 1992.
The numbers still tell the story. The series peaked at 9.6 on IMDb, entered the platform’s global Top 10 soon after release, and still holds a stellar 9.2 today. It also changed what Indian OTT could be. Scam 1992 set the template for a wave of real-life dramas and became a cultural phenomenon in memes, reels and playlists.
It spawned an anthology with Scam 2003: The Telgi Story, and the excitement is now building for Scam 2010: The Subrata Roy Saga, the next chapter of the franchise. The makers are expected to make an announcement soon, so watch this space!
