One of my favourite jodis, Aishwariya Rai Bachchan and Akshay Kumar, reunite for the Diwali blockbuster Action Replayy, which transports the duo back to the funkadelic and fabulous Seventies! So let’s take a trip back to the era where bell bottoms and safari suits reigned, where Rajesh Khanna’s wiggles and mannerisms set hearts on fire, and when jodis drew people to the cinema for some masala magic.

Rajesh Khanna & Sharmila Tagore – When you think of the early 70’s then you cannot forget the reigning superstar at the time: Rajesh Khanna. Rajesh Khanna officially conquered Bollywood with his pairing with Sharmila in Aradhana (1969).Sharmila and Rajesh made 9 films together during the 70’s, but the highlights of their Jodi have to be in Amar Prem (1971) and Daag (1973). Both actors could not be more different in their acting styles, with Rajesh and his wiggling his head sideways, and fast dialogue delivery, and Sharmila, the more understated actress that had worked with her mentor Satyajit Ray. Despite this, the two made us believe their love and had such chemistry with each other. Sharmila’s beautiful acting was able to somewhat restrain Rajesh’s mannerisms and his portrayal of a bigamous man in Daag was one of his best roles ever, because we could tell that this was a man that was still in love and fighting his urges against society. And who could forget the simmering chemistry apparent in “Roop Tera Mastana” where they set the screen on fire with their yearning body language! Hai hai mirchi!
